Dr. Jimmy Lam

Dr Jimmy Lam is a highly experienced, Australian-trained Urologist specialising in advanced laparoscopic, robotic surgery and minimally invasive urological care. With over two decades of experience, Dr Lam’s has performed over 1,000 robotic and laparoscopic procedures and holds senior consultant appointments at major public and private hospitals. Academic Background

Dr Jimmy Lam has demonstrated academic excellence throughout his career. He was Dux of his school and placed on the Order of Merit List, ranking in the Top 500 of the 1990 Higher School Certificate. He graduated with Honours from the University of New South Wales Medical School and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2005. In 2006, Dr Lam completed an advanced fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, gaining further expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Prior to returning to Adelaide in 2007, he undertook an International Preceptorship in Laparoscopic Urology at the Cleveland Clinic under Professor Inderbir Gill, a world-renowned leader and pioneer in minimally invasive and robotic urological surgery. Further consolidating his expertise, Dr Lam was awarded a Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery from the University of Adelaide.

Surgical Innovation and Pioneering

Dr Lam is the first Australian-trained Asian Urologist practicing in South Australia and is widely recognised as a pioneer in minimally invasive urological surgery. His current public appointment as Senior Consultant Urologist at Flinders Medical Centre, Royal Adelaide Hospital, and Noarlunga Hospital. His current private appointment as Senior Consultant Urologist at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital, Calvary Adelaide Hospital, St Andrew’s Hospital and Seaford Day Surgery Centre.

He has led several state-first surgical advances, including performing South Australia’s first Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) with morcellation in 2007, and the first laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in 2008. He has been performing robotic surgery using the da Vinci system since 2008 and was among the first urologists in South Australia to adopt this technology. To date, he has performed over 1,000 robotic and laparoscopic procedures and has mentored and trained urologists and fellows in advanced surgical techniques. In 2012, Dr Lam introduced GreenLight laser technology to South Australia and performed the state’s first GreenLight laser prostatectomy. He is a past member of the Australian GreenLight Laser Education Faculty and has mentored numerous colleagues in this technology.

 

Education, Training and Research

Dr Jimmy Lam has over two decades of experience in investigator-led and industry-sponsored clinical research in urology. His research spans Phase II–IV clinical trials across prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, and Peyronie’s disease. As Principal Investigator at the Repatriation General Hospital, he has contributed to major national and international multicentre studies, including the IMPACT targeted prostate cancer screening programme for men with inherited genetic risk and a landmark Phase III randomised trial examining the timing of androgen deprivation therapy in prostate cancer.

His research experience also includes leadership roles in large randomised controlled trials evaluating novel treatments for overactive bladder, as well as extensive involvement as a Sub-Investigator in pivotal oncology, functional urology, and device-based studies sponsored by leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Since 2011, Dr Lam has served as Faculty for the Australian and New Zealand Surgical Skills Education and Training (ASSET) programme, where he is dedicated to teaching and mentoring the surgeons of the future.
